The evolutionary psychology of attraction is among the most contested and most misrepresented bodies of literature in popular culture. David Buss’s cross-cultural data is frequently cited by people who have not read it to support conclusions it does not support. The Singh waist-to-hip ratio findings are routinely treated as universal laws of attraction by writers who have not engaged with the subsequent literature qualifying them. The gap between what the research actually establishes and what circulates in popular accounts of that research is not incidental — it is a feature of how this particular domain gets used.

This hub covers the research on attraction as it exists in the primary literature: what replicated, what didn’t, what the methodology can and cannot establish, and where the genuine scientific disagreements are.

What the research shows

Buss’s 1989 cross-cultural mate preference study — 37 cultures, 10,047 respondents — remains the foundational text in evolutionary psychology of attraction. What it measured: self-reported preferences for attributes in long-term partners. What replicated: women rating financial resources and ambition higher than men did; men rating youth and physical attractiveness higher. These patterns held across the 37 cultures in the study with enough consistency to support the claim of cross-cultural regularity.

What the study did not establish: that these preferences are immutable, that they determine individual behavior, or that stated preferences in surveys translate directly into actual partner selection. Eastwick and Finkel (2008) documented the gap between stated and revealed preferences in a speed-dating study — people’s self-reported mate preferences predicted their attractions poorly when actual partner selection was measured. This is a significant qualification of what the Buss data can be used to claim.

Feingold’s 1992 meta-analysis of physical attractiveness effects found that the gender difference in stated preferences for physical attractiveness is smaller in actual partner selection than in hypothetical preference ratings. The halo effect — the tendency to attribute positive characteristics to physically attractive people — operates similarly across genders in behavioral data, despite the asymmetry in stated preferences.

Singh’s (1993) research on waist-to-hip ratio as an attractiveness signal produced findings that were subsequently qualified by cross-cultural replication work showing cultural variation that Singh’s original samples did not capture. The finding is real but more culturally variable than initial reports suggested.
