There is a specific pattern that arrives in enough forms to be recognizable as a pattern. He was attentive. He responded quickly. The conversation had weight and pace and something that felt like mutual investment. Then, without discernible precipitating event, he stopped. Not immediately — the fade took days, sometimes weeks, marked by increasingly sparse replies that arrived after increasingly long intervals. By the end, the silence was complete. He is now described, in the vocabulary available, as emotionally unavailable.
That description is not wrong, exactly. But it is imprecise in a way that matters. The clinical literature has a more specific vocabulary for what this regulatory pattern is, where it comes from, and why it behaves the way it does. The vocabulary is more useful than “emotionally unavailable” because it describes a mechanism rather than a verdict. A mechanism can be understood. A verdict mostly just stings.
The pattern has a name in the attachment literature. It is called avoidant deactivation. The name is not a moral assessment. It is a description of a behavioral regulatory strategy under conditions of perceived threat.
The regulatory system, briefly
John Bowlby did not develop attachment theory to describe adult romantic relationships. He developed it to describe the behavioral system by which human infants maintain proximity to protective figures under conditions of threat. The attachment system, in Bowlby’s (1969) formulation, is a behavioral regulatory system — not a personality trait, not a love style, not a framework for self-understanding in the therapy-content sense. It is a system with an activation condition (perceived threat) and a set of behavioral outputs (proximity-seeking) that evolved because proximity to a protective figure, in the environment of evolutionary adaptedness, was the most reliable response to threat.
What Hazan and Shaver demonstrated in 1987 is that this same system operates in adult romantic attachment. The specific mechanisms shift — the attachment figure is a romantic partner rather than a primary caregiver, the proximity-seeking behaviors take different forms — but the underlying regulatory architecture is conserved. Adults with secure attachment histories activate the system under threat, seek proximity to their attachment figure, and de-activate the system when proximity is achieved and the threat is resolved. Adults with insecure attachment histories activate the system differently.
The secure base is Bowlby’s term for the felt security that an attachment figure provides — the condition of knowing that the figure is accessible and responsive, which allows the attached individual to explore the environment without defensive vigilance. In adult romantic relationships, the secure base function is provided by a partner who is reliably accessible and responsive. The absence of that reliability — perceived or actual — is the threat condition that activates the insecure regulatory strategies.
Hyperactivation and deactivation
Mikulincer and Shaver (2016) provide the most comprehensive empirical synthesis of the two insecure attachment strategies. Their framework describes a primary appraisal (Is there a threat? Is the attachment figure available?) and two secondary appraisal routes that diverge based on attachment history.
The anxious strategy is hyperactivation: turn the attachment system up. Increase proximity-seeking behavior. Escalate contact. Heighten vigilance for signs of abandonment. The strategic logic is that increasing pressure on the attachment figure will eventually produce the desired accessibility and responsiveness. The experience from the inside is preoccupation, hypervigilance, and difficulty regulating the emotional state produced by the threat.
The avoidant strategy is deactivation: turn the attachment system down. Suppress proximity-seeking behavior. Withdraw. Create distance. The strategic logic is that reducing reliance on the attachment figure — who has historically been unavailable or punishing of attachment bids — avoids the pain of rejection. The experience from the inside is dismissiveness toward one’s own attachment needs and discomfort with the closeness that activates the system.

The table is dimensional, not categorical. The ECR scale (Experiences in Close Relationships, Brennan, Clark, and Shaver, 1998) measures both attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance on continuous scales, not as discrete types. A person can be high on both dimensions — which produces the fearful-avoidant profile — or low on both, which is the operational definition of secure attachment. The important empirical point is that the person who disappears is probably high on avoidance, and that high avoidance is a dimensional position on a continuous scale, not a character type.
What the ECR measures
Brennan, Clark, and Shaver (1998) developed the ECR scale from a factor analysis of existing adult attachment measures. The resulting instrument has two subscales: Anxiety (18 items measuring fear of abandonment and preoccupation with the relationship) and Avoidance (18 items measuring discomfort with closeness and reliance on others). Items are rated on a 7-point scale. The scale has been validated across large samples and has become the standard measurement instrument in adult attachment research.
The avoidance subscale captures what the disappearing texter is doing at the level of self-report: endorsing items like “I prefer not to show a partner how I feel deep down” and “I don’t feel comfortable opening up to romantic partners.” The self-report is not identical to the behavioral output — people can report high avoidance while still engaging in relationships that require some degree of self-disclosure — but it maps onto the behavioral profile with enough precision to be predictive of behaviors including communication withdrawal under conditions of perceived intimacy increase.
Vrtička and colleagues (2008) added a neuroimaging dimension to this picture. Using fMRI, they showed that attachment pattern modulates activity in the amygdala and striatum during social appraisal tasks. Specifically, participants with higher attachment avoidance showed suppressed amygdala activation in response to social stimuli — consistent with the deactivation framework’s prediction that avoidant individuals are actively suppressing, not simply lacking, attachment-relevant emotional responses. The deactivation is a regulatory act, not an absence.
Why he stopped texting
The deactivation strategy activates, in the Mikulincer and Shaver (2016) framework, when proximity threatens to exceed the threshold that the avoidant individual can tolerate. The threshold is not fixed — it varies with relationship history, current stress levels, and the specific attachment-system activation that the relationship is producing. But the mechanism is consistent: when the attachment system activates above threshold, the avoidant strategy is to withdraw proximity rather than seek it.
In the specific context of early-stage digital relationship formation, the activation condition is often hard to identify from outside the regulatory system. The relationship was going well by external observation: frequent contact, substantive conversation, apparent mutual investment. From inside the avoidant regulatory system, “going well” has a threat valence. The investment is real — the attachment system is activating — and the activation itself becomes the perceived engulfment threat that triggers withdrawal. The response is not to the person. It is to the activation of the attachment system that the person produced.
Hazan and Shaver’s (1987) original adult romantic attachment framework described this pattern in terms of the working models that individuals carry from their early attachment experience: a model of self (as worthy or unworthy of care) and a model of other (as reliable or unreliable). The avoidant working model of other is of an attachment figure who is unreliable, punishing of attachment bids, or both — which produces the preemptive withdrawal that Mikulincer and Shaver’s framework elaborates.
The clinical literature does not describe this as indifference. It describes it as a specific form of relational defense.
A note on what this piece is not
The attachment science does not tell you whether the person who stopped texting will resume contact, whether the regulatory pattern can change, or whether the relationship has any future.
