Balmain – Spring/Summer 2010

balmain-main

Kanye West, a man who has been spotted in public often wearing Balmain apparel, has called their 2010 spring collection his “favourite line” at the moment, and it is easy to see why. The French label, who collaborated with photographer Karim Sadhi and model Clement Chabernaud for their ad campaign, feature several casual outfits including a denim vest paired with faded yellow jeans and a bomber jacket with fitted combat trousers. The spring collection takes inspiration from motorbike culture, which explains the casual military look as seen in the pictures.

Fisher King Editorial from Sportswear International

Fisher-King-1

Photographer Ryan Michael Kelly captures the theme of fishing in ‘The Fisher King’, an editorial for magazine Sportswear International. Phillip Lim 3.1 – Spring 2010

Philip-Lim-1

Designer Phillip Lim mixes casual with luxury in his upcoming spring collection, recently unveiled at New York Fashion Week. Looking to post-war beatniks for inspiration, his muted, yet sophisticated array of clothes followed a black/grey pattern, experimenting with leisurely and luxurious pieces such as trousers paired with oversize knits. In addition to the highlights of the collection, which include the tuxedo shirt and the oversize black poncho, their footwear lineup is as impressive, from suede boots to the gold/black leather Oxford shoes.

Generra Spring/Summer 2010 Runway

generra-spring-summer-2010-1

New Dandyism has some photos of the new Generra label’s runway show. Swaim Hutson, recently named creative director of fashion label Generra, debuts his designs for next year’s spring season. Hutson, who founded the now-defunct indie label Obedient Sons & Daughters, steers clear of his traditional rock-influenced aesthetics for a simple casual look. A back-to-basics collection, a muted colour palette of beige and grey are spiced up with splashes of orange and marine blue, featuring pieces such as slim shirts, fitted suit jackets, and relaxed cropped shorts.

Robert Geller Spring/Summer 2010 – Runway Video

Robert-Geller-Spring-Summer-2010-1

To loud rock and roll drums, Robert Geller’s models walk down the runway looking like cold and calculated libertines spying for victims with expressionless faces. A scarf dangling from a breast pocket is a thematic element that adds dandy flair to the darkest looks of his Spring 2010 collection. There are plenty of outfits to get excited about here. The tan pants with gray jacket and fedora look is devastating. And the black and white jailhouse print slacks are standout too. Watch the video and get hype for Geller in 2010.

Patrik Ervell Spring/Summer 2010 from Dazed Digital

Patrik-Ervell-Spring-Summer-2010-1

It’s great to see so many designers going the step further to make their collections conceptual and now we can count Patrik Ervell among them with a very interesting and inventive idea behind his Spring and Summer 2010 collection. In an effort to craft wholly American menswear, Ervell experimented with rust and oxidization, with suits and sportswear stained by rust and jean jackets and button ups washed and aged, sometimes with metal incorporated into the cloth to give a luminous sheen. The romance and decay of industrial age America may be the inspiration but there is a lot of optimism and simplicity to the collection as well.

Marc by Marc Jacobs – Spring 2010

marc-jacobs-spring-summer-2010

Marc Jacobs brings the style of 80’s teen movie anti-hero Duckie who plays opposite Molly Ringwald’s character in Pretty In Pink out of the time machine and onto the runway for his Spring 2010 Marc by Marc Jacobs line proving that Marc Jacobs wears his influences on his sleeve and usually to beautiful results. The eternal feud between Jocks and Nerds plays out in photos and this time everybody wins. The colors are loud, the patterns clash, and the hair is teased out ridiculously. The striped cardigan and the knit motorcycle jacket are excellent twists on nerdy staples. Special thanks to John Hughes for giving Jacobs the thread from which to weave a little 1980’s fashion gold for us all in 2010.

Commonwealth Utilities – Spring/Summer 2010 Runway

Commonwealth-Utilities-Spring-Summer-Runway-1

Commonwealth Utilities debuted their Spring and Summer 2010 collection on the runway last week in a very atypical setting which sets a refreshing change of pace for the label in 2010. With the barber chairs and iconic poster covered walls of Astor Place Hair in New York as the backdrop, one can surmise Commonwealth sought to distance themselves from other upstart companies debuting new looks at NY fashion week by switching it up and appealing to the everyman on the street rather than only those interested in men’s fashion. The looks are understated but well thought out, with sparse colors and crisp silhouettes. We hope Commonwealth will continue to surprise us in seasons to come.

Michael Kors – Spring 2010

kors-spring-summer-2010

Glamour and icy futurism perform side by side on Michael Kors Spring 2010 Men’s line that features avant garde yet classically designed sleeveless jackets and zippered knits. The glacier blue and marble print suits are stunning, as well as the interesting inclusion of parachute pants and a utility jacket with a drawstring. There’s something innately American and luxurious about Kors’ offerings here for 2010 but there’s also a hint of outer space and what fashion will look like in the years to come that is very intriguing.
