Fhonetics Autumn/Winter 2009 Lookbook

fhonetics-front

Stockholm-based label fhonetics has been around since 2005, but is still widely unknown Stateside. That may perhaps change as Scandinavian brands continue to expand and gain traction around the world and the Autumn/Winter 09 lookbook from fhonetics aims to make more fans with the collection’s accessible style. Like previous seasons, the A/W 09 collection remains largely neutral in its color scheme, sticking with blacks and whites punctuated by the occasional flare of a vibrant blue in a striped or geometric-patterned sweater. Entitled “Remember Tomorrow,” the range does have a sense of contradiction and playing with opposites, most obviously seen in the contrast white buttons on a black vest and cardigan. Select fhonetics pieces are available at the concept store in Stockholm, or from Swedish online retailers like Fashionisland and Nelly.

Petar Petrov – Spring/Summer 2009 Lookbook

petar-petrov-ss09-front

Bulgarian designer Petar Petrov bases his self-named label in both Sofia and Vienna, and his aesthetic is distinctively influenced by Eastern Europe, with his slim-cut jeans, short-hemmed shirts and sleeveless tops. His Spring/Summer 09 collection is full of suitably lightweight cotton and nylon sportswear. With a liberal use of drawstrings on both shirts and pants and plenty of pockets, the line is tailor-made for an active lifestyle. The soft colors keep things airy, with the exception of some darker statement pieces, like a knee-length nylon jacket. The lookbook, like the clothing, is fairly straightforward. Nakkna Spring/Summer 2009 Lookbook

nakkna-main

The spring / summer 2009 collection from Swedish fashion label Nakkna seems to be a study in fit. Founded in 2003, the avant-garde label has titled its latest collection ‘In The Flesh.’ The collection includes a selection of both slim and loose fit pants (check out the flared leg) and trim t-shirts and polos alongside baggy rolled cuff sweaters and cardigans. Certain items are loosely draped on models – like the denim shirt – while others seem trim and form fitted. Items from Nakkna’s spring summer collection are available in the company’s on-line store.

Created in 2008, Spanish label HE – Homini Emerito – is geared towards “the young, fashion-conscious male.” The label’s spring/summer 2009 line is out and features a collection of stylish and reasonably priced jackets, shirts, Bermuda shorts, shoes, and accessories. At times the collection seems reminiscent of another time with its bleached denim jackets, faded and riped pants, and faded pastel colors.

Rogues Gallery Fall/Winter 2009 Lookbook

roguesgallery-fw09-front

Rogues Gallery
has established itself as a label less defined by any prescribed trend and more by founder Alex Carleton’s Maine roots. With its nautical motif and hardy sensibility, the collection on display in the Fall 2009 Lookbook continues in the brand’s tradition of New England-inspired clothing that translates into city life, as well. Like the clothing, the photographs, shot against a backdrop of discarded antiques and maritime relics, have a faded, sea-stained quality about them. As anyone who has dealt with harsh Northeast weather will tell you, layering is a necessity, and the collection lends itself well to that, with screen-printed t-shirts, rugged button-downs, vests and patterned, zip-front knitwear. The flannel-lined, hooded down jacket or gray tweed trench complete the look.

For their new lookbook, the brand enlisted the services of Josh Beech, one of the new icons of men’s fashion.

Unconditional Autumn/Winter 2009 Lookbook

unconditional-main

Unconditional is a British label with a talent for taking everyday basics and giving them avant garde flourishes with a futuristic edge. The results are unique, elaborate designs unlike those seen elsewhere in casual meanswear today. The Autumn/Winter 2009 collection stresses the versatility of layering in cold weather, as it offers a full spectrum of coats, hats, scarves and some pieces that combine elements of each. Unconditional also embraces the of creativity of asymmetrical design, as seen in black jeans with zippers up the right leg, and a coat with an oversized collar that fastens off-center. For every fashion-forward piece that pushes the boundaries of wearability, the well-edited collection has plenty of options that offer a more restrained, but still design-friendly aesthetic, like the belted gray pea coat. For information on where to buy, visit the Unconditional website.

Our Legacy Lookbook – Spring/Summer 2009

our-legacy-spring-summer-2009-lookbook

A lookbook presents an opportunity for a label to provide context for their seasonal collections in a way that traditional runway shows often cannot. For its Spring/Summer 09 line, “A Sundried Youth,” Our Legacy sought to evoke an older man looking back on his life, and how his garments, aged over time, reminds him of his everyday experiences. Keeping in line with the theme, the lookbook shuns a polished, studio-shot look for more natural, familiar settings. Models are shown going about their daily business, grocery shopping, walking down city streets and browsing cigar shops, documenting the seemingly inconsequential moments that make up the bulk of our waking lives. Most fittingly, it demonstrates how our clothing reflects what we do. A collage of snapshot images lends itself well to the scrapbook-like feel.
