Junya Watanabe Comme des Garcons Fall/Winter 2009

Whittling down the silhouette of game-hunting gear to stick-like proportions, Junya Watanabe offers up Field & Stream-inspired tradition with a twist for the Fall/Winter 2009 Commes des Garcons collection. Field jackets are given blazer-like structuring, marsh pants are cropped and cut slim. Outdoorsy adornments including knife pockets, elbow patches, and rifle-rests are played-up playfully in contrasting fabrics and colors, including pumpkin orange canvas, yellow apple nylon, and caramel brown leather. Other items such as jackets, jeans, and shoes are part of collaborations with Pendleton, North Face, Levi’s, and Trickers.

Junya Watanabe – Comme des Garçons Beige Suede Boots

Given the opportunity by his mentor and founder of Comme des Garçons, Rei Kawakubo, to work under his own name as a sub-division of the label, Junya Watanabe has been known for his innovative designs since the early nineties. For Fall 2009 Junya Watanabe Comme Des Garçons takes the direction of putting a contemporary spin on sporting apparel like those of hunters and fishermen. Of the many interesting pieces in the new collection are these beige suede boots. At first glance, one can’t help but be reminded of several durable classic components like Timberland’s Waterproof 6 Inch Basic Boot, particularly the design of the shoe laces and number of loop holes. Signs of the desert boot introduced by Clark’s in 1950s also seemed to have played a role in offsetting the ruggedness of the basic boot feel just a little. After staying true to the motif of hunting and fishing, what really makes these boots special is Junya Watanabe’s innovativeness to incorporate the superficial perforations found on the essential wing tip shoe. Key word here is ’superficial’, so don’t go hunting, fishing, or out in the rain for that matter in these $1350.00 suede boots. Hey, you don’t just wear your drivers and moccasins to drive your car in do you? Thought so. It’s all for show, and a great show at that. Get them at Colette.
Junya Watanabe – Spring 2010 Collection

Models fashioned plaid jackets, white pants, foulard with pocket square. Many looks were accessorized with golfing flat caps and ascots that added to this era-inspired show. Watanabe still infused some modern elements in the outerwear with hoods on sportcoats and tech-fabric parkas. Particularly in this showing in Paris, he delivers a menswear collection that is clearly nostalgic in its presentation.
