Patrik Ervell Spring/Summer 2010 from Dazed Digital
It’s great to see so many designers going the step further to make their collections conceptual and now we can count Patrik Ervell among them with a very interesting and inventive idea behind his Spring and Summer 2010 collection. In an effort to craft wholly American menswear, Ervell experimented with rust and oxidization, with suits and sportswear stained by rust and jean jackets and button ups washed and aged, sometimes with metal incorporated into the cloth to give a luminous sheen. The romance and decay of industrial age America may be the inspiration but there is a lot of optimism and simplicity to the collection as well.

Marc by Marc Jacobs – Spring 2010
Marc Jacobs brings the style of 80’s teen movie anti-hero Duckie who plays opposite Molly Ringwald’s character in Pretty In Pink out of the time machine and onto the runway for his Spring 2010 Marc by Marc Jacobs line proving that Marc Jacobs wears his influences on his sleeve and usually to beautiful results. The eternal feud between Jocks and Nerds plays out in photos and this time everybody wins. The colors are loud, the patterns clash, and the hair is teased out ridiculously. The striped cardigan and the knit motorcycle jacket are excellent twists on nerdy staples. Special thanks to John Hughes for giving Jacobs the thread from which to weave a little 1980’s fashion gold for us all in 2010.

Commonwealth Utilities – Spring/Summer 2010 Runway
Commonwealth Utilities debuted their Spring and Summer 2010 collection on the runway last week in a very atypical setting which sets a refreshing change of pace for the label in 2010. With the barber chairs and iconic poster covered walls of Astor Place Hair in New York as the backdrop, one can surmise Commonwealth sought to distance themselves from other upstart companies debuting new looks at NY fashion week by switching it up and appealing to the everyman on the street rather than only those interested in men’s fashion. The looks are understated but well thought out, with sparse colors and crisp silhouettes. We hope Commonwealth will continue to surprise us in seasons to come.

Man Up Editorial from WWIT
In a recent issue of WWIT photographer Zach Burns and stylists Dennis Lye and Ivie Okhions along with model Thomas Bell keep it rugged in the Fall of 2009 with leather jackets, thick knit scarves, and some very handsome overcoats. The photos are no frills and look photographed in an abandoned industrial park. Some definitely sound style choices here, and of course some great looking clothes.

Michael Kors – Spring 2010
Glamour and icy futurism perform side by side on Michael Kors Spring 2010 Men’s line that features avant garde yet classically designed sleeveless jackets and zippered knits. The glacier blue and marble print suits are stunning, as well as the interesting inclusion of parachute pants and a utility jacket with a drawstring. There’s something innately American and luxurious about Kors’ offerings here for 2010 but there’s also a hint of outer space and what fashion will look like in the years to come that is very intriguing.

Gilded Age – Spring 2010
A casual Sunday picnic amongst family and friends in the fine outdoors is the perfect backdrop for Gilded Age’s spring collection. A simple and clean look throughout, designer Stefan Miljanic’s pieces for his newest lineup feature a number of casual apparel ranging from denim and button-down shirts to a variety of fitted jackets. In addition, the colour palette is muted, a range of khaki pieces mixed in with the usual blue and black, evoking a relaxed atmosphere in a light summer’s day.

Michael Bastian – Spring 2010
Michael Bastian said he’s inspired lately by the way Latin men blend machismo and emotion and this concept is vividly evident in his Spring 2010 collection. The collection has a lot of spirit, and the inspiration is overt, as there are t-shirts emblazoned with the Virgin Mary and a “Milagroso” tank, not to mention a model with the Holy Mother tattooed on his arm. The colors are vibrant and the looks are original from the formalwear to the casual with a Latin or one might say Italian essence. Wholeheartedly masculine but not without fun, Bastian brings plenty of heat and has his muse in the palm of his hand.

Duckie Brown – Spring 2010
One of many brands showcasing their latest lineups at the New York Fashion Week, Duckie Brown unveil their spring collection by breaking tradition: shedding heavy outerwear for a more leisurely array of garments with a ’summertime’ feel. In stark contrast from previous collections, lead designers Daniel Silver and Steven Cox explore the themes of ‘exposure and vulnerability’, with gauzy shirts, striped patterns and oversize plaids several of the collection’s key pieces. The elegant blazers are a cool addition to the lineup, as well as their volumious, chic shorts, and their high-waisted swimsuits are reminiscent of the Swinging Sixties. Duckie Brown’s spring line for next year manages to maintain the balance between sophistication and a carefree attitude.

Y-3 Spring – 2010
In honour of the upcoming World Cup finals in South Africa next summer, Yohji Yamamoto’s Y-3 unveiled their spring collection in a show centred around national anthems and featuring a stadium installation to embrace their concept of combining sports with fashion. Yamamoto, unparalleled in the world of fashion avant-garde, presented new designs for his spring lineup which included exaggerated silhouettes, loose-cut trousers, and abstract flag motifs in the colorways of eight soccer federations sponsored by adidas: South Africa, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Spain, Argentina, France, and Russia. Other pieces in the Y-3 collection include oversized plaid shirts, nylon parkas, and a range of tank tops. The show closed with France soccer legend Zinedine Zidane sharing a kickabout with Yamamoto, with other celebrities such as Lupe Fiasco, Russell Simmons, Devon Aoki, and Rufus Wainwright also in attendance.

For their Fall 2009 collection, the New York label incorporates the lifestyle of an outdoor sportsman into their line. The popular Sagamore Parka may strike a resemblance to items from outdoor clothier companies such as L.L. Bean or Eddie Bauer. The Sagamore is a waterproof cotton ventile with an all cotton lining. It’s pretty standard in style and function with four front utility pockets, combination zipper and snap front closure and adjustable hood and cuffs. But it’s simplicity in utility and wearability that is the allure of this pioneer in streetwear. That is why Supreme still remains a premier label in the subculture.
