ASOS Fall 2009 Collection

UK’s ASOS Fall 2009 collection meshes together so many veritable styles from menswear’s archives, one would be hard-pressed to pinpoint any specific inspiration. Included are early 60’s American suiting, Holmsian trenches, late millenia Burberry trousers, Ralph Lauren early 80’s Navajo sweaters, and 70’s-inspired knits, with a healthy pastiche of early 90’s grunge. Yet with all the disparate styles, it still works. And because of the collection’s variety, walks down entirely different fashion lanes are possible–for example, the tweed coat can be paired with skinny purple jeans and a nylon windbreaker or with a gray cableknit sweater and tartan tie. Available online September 1, 2009.

The Viridi-anne Spring 2010 Collection

Drawing inspiration from nature has become an on going theme for Tomoaki Okaniwa, Japanese menswear designer and founder of Viridi-Anne. His latest effort entitled “Ecdysis”, the act of shedding of an outer cuticular layer is fitting considering its Fall/Winter predecessor “Chrysalis”, a protective covering or sheltered state of being. Symbolizing a change from being strong, safe, and guarded to growth, risk of new challenges, and progress Okaniwa makes a seamless transition. Meshed elements of streetwear with concepts from mountaineers, early explorers, and cyclists make for an original combination of style and durability. The subtle colors on key pieces like hooded trench coats, roll up pants, and linen blazers Viridi-Anne succeed in maintaining wearability. Only 8 years since it’s inception, Okaniwa proves with this collection that Viridi-Anne will continue to be a force to be reckoned with next Spring.
