Looking to inspire new patterns in urban mobility MIT Media Labs created the Folding Roboscooter. The lightweight scooter collapses to save space in our increasingly crowded cities. The Roboscooter is powered by an electric motor allowing it to be both whisper quiet and free of emissions.

The folks at MIT Media Labs have two sales models in mind. Model one is typical single owner use. Model two sees the Roboscooter functioning more like a Zip Car. You will be able to rent a Roboscooter for one way travel to your destination. Upon arrival you dock the Roboscooter and there it will wait for the next available patron.

Yves Behar Bike Helmet for NYC

One of the main challenges for a cyclist is finding a helmet that doesn’t look like it belongs in Lance Armstrong’s gym bag. The NYC Helmet, designed by Yves Behar as part of Fuse Project, all but solves that conundrum. Made of a polystyrene inner shell (with ventilation holes large enough for u-locks) and soft fabric cover with integrated straps, the helmet visually is a great integration of the rough utilitarianism of a skater’s helmet and the sleek utilitarianism of a runners hat. The fabric cover is available as an orange visor or as a gray flannel style with a neck flap.

Elmoto E-Bike by Thomas Hentges

emoto-bike-main

The Elmoto E-Bike is a battery-powered bike aimed at urban dwellers seeking alternative transportation options. The E-bike blurs the distinction between bicycle and motorcycle by incorporating an electric motor, suspension, lights, and gauges into a package that uses a bicycle frame and wheels and tires. Designed by Thomas Hentges, it has a 45 mile range with a top speed of 45 km/hr. On average, it takes about 70 cents to fill, which might prove impressive enough to make it a viable transportation option. Additionally, the E-Bike would likely have a lower initial cost than electric or hybrid automobiles that consumers might consider otherwise.
