district9main

With a few strong blockbuster releases already out now for the summer, movies such as District 9 will look to compete for a place on the box-office numbers list against the bigger studio projects. What better way to follow up films like Transformers 2 and Terminator: Salvation than with a Sci-Fi flick produce by none other than Lord of the Rings director, Peter Jackson. Shot documentary style, which gives it an interesting angle, District 9 follows the story of an Alien race who have become refugees on earth in a section in South Africa. The film involves alien weapon technology, political strife, rebellion, and more. District 9 is expected to release in the U.S. on August 14.

Moon Trailer

sam-rockwell-moon

Moon, directed and co-wrote by Duncan Jones, looks to be the Sci-Fi suspense thriller of the fall.

In Moon, Sam Bell played by Sam Rockwell (Frost/Nixon) is an astronaut working on the moon base SELENE, to harvest a gas used on Earth to help reverse the energy crisis. The mission, which is a three year stint completely isolated from human contact, will allow Bell an early retirement with his family upon his return to Earth. His only companion on this mission is a computer named GERTY, which is voiced by none other than actor Kevin Spacey. With a sort of “Cast Away” vibe, the majority of the films dialog is between Bell and the artificial intelligence GERTY. With Bell closely approaching his return to Earth, he discovers another being on SELENE with him, and begins to feel the strain of his almost three years without human interaction. Stressed, claustrophobic, and starting to imagine things, the calm and obedient Bell begins to questions his mission, GERTY, and himself.

Awaydays Movie Trailer

away-days-poster

Awaydays, based on the bestselling novel by Kevin Sampson, is a movie about teenage angst, football hooliganism, drugs, rock n’ roll, and fashion. Set in Birkenhead, England in 1979, the film follows 19-year-old Paul Carty, who somehow finds his way to become a member of the Pack, one of the more well known football gangs Paul has been fascinated with ever since he started going to matches. The Pack is popular for their effeminate style, wedge haircuts, Lacoste tennis shirts, Adidas trainers, and Lois Jeans, and they are the rivals of other gangs such as the Bootboys and the Boneheads.

Movies about football hooliganism has been hard to adapt. While films like “Green Street Hooligans” and “Football Factory” were sub-par for the most part, some may not have high hopes for Awaydays. What makes this film different and more interesting however, is the period, set in 1979 during the early days of Margaret Thatcher’s premiership. While 1979 maybe a more interesting period for this subject, other factors such as the fashion aspect, and actor Stephen Graham’s (This is England) involvement can make this a worthwhile movie.

Awaydays opens in May.
