Designed by William O’Brien Jr. the recently build Allandale house is a stunning, symmetrical triumph of modern architecture. Built to house O’Brien and his family, the house is built off of three forms of the letter A. From the front of the house to each and every window, this house serves as a picturesque reminder concerning the greatness of O’Brien’s innovative design mind. Of the three A’s, each was designed with a specific intention in mind, whether it be to house bedrooms or to serve as a wine cellar.

Situated in Ottawa, Ontario, the Fraser residence is a modern home that boasts strong linear lines on the exterior as well as the interior. The home’s exterior consists of earth-toned brick, cedar siding and dark bronze aluminum glazing systems forming a neutral color pallette. All of the common living spaces have enormous windows that allows natural light to flood in. These make for quite seamless transitions from indoor to outdoor living spaces. The furnishings, cabinetry, and fixtures all have sleek, streamlined finishes that meld with the modern aesthetic that architect, Christopher Simmonds created. The dark oak floors and cabinetry provide a strong contrast from the stark, white walls adding to the home’s character.

“The site – a relatively steep hill – offers a stunning view over Graz. This panorama also provided the main guiding principle for the design. One additional goal was to provide direct access to the garden. Due to the very steep slope, this goal actually worked contrary to the aim of maximizing the panoramic view. The upper level, which is oriented completely towards the fantastic view, contains all of the living space, while the lower level houses the doctor’s office and adjoining rooms.” Located in Graz, Austria and designed by LOVE architecture, Bernhard Schönherr.

Owner, Carl Turner has converted two barns, one new and one renovated, into the perfect getaway for friends and family in a corner of Norfolk County, England.  In the renovated portion of the retreat, much of the integrity of the existing place was preserved by showcasing the brick facade.  This historical charm provides an intriguing contrast to the newly added portion.  Inside the home, there are beautiful wood trusses and steel purlins exposed throughout the house, offering some architectural character.  A lot of the furnishings inside are constructed oriented strand board (or OSB) which helped to create a cohesive decor throughout and lighten the expenses for the homeowners.  Please see the entire piece on this home and the rest of the images at the Dwell site.

Cloudy House is an extension to a house from the 1930′s. The extension was designed by LASC studio, which features a dark exterior that extends onto the patio. The interiors of the home is actually a bit more impressive with its exposed wood structures and warm living spaces. The interiors don’t really reflect the outside statement of the home, but it all works out well for a living space that looks comfortable and cool.

By designing a living space to help the environment, Phillips has succeeded in taking a brave step forward for the furniture industries commitment to saving planet Earth.

the Microbial Home Probe we adopt a systemic approach to many of the domestic processes we take for granted and ask questions about how we deal with resources. It is a proposal for an integrated cyclical ecosystem where each function’s output is another’s input. We view the home as a biological machine to filter, process and recycle what we conventionally think of as waste – sewage, effluent, garbage, waste water. The Probe suggests that we should move closer to nature and challenges the wisdom of annihilating the bacteria that surround us. It proposes strategies for developing a balanced microbial ecosystem in the home.

Don’t let the slightly menacing facade fool you: these new Celato Storage units from Italian design firm De Castelli are meant to rid you of your storage fears. Hidden birch drawers emerge from the powerful tower structure, available in maistral copper, acid-etched bronze, and acid-etched copper finishes. The Celato towers have a very distinct and sleek design, which is sure to make them as much of a conversation piece as a high-end storage unit.

Akke Functional Art’s Axel Yberg is at his finest again, moving from the realm of table-tennis to music with his latest creation: “Bo Biddley.” After donating the rights to a custom piece of furniture to the highest bidder at a charity auction, Yberg received a request to make a coffee table. Using guitar strings to create this tensegrity table (think the same principles that hold up a suspension bridge), Yberg put together an incredible mash-up of wood and glass that takes it’s name from legendary blues guitarist Bo Diddley. The stings are completely functional as well – playing a trio of different pitches when plucked. After throwing in a couple of mother-of-pearl guitar picks, Yberg had successfully created another awe-inspiring piece of functional art.

The cascading creek house by Bercy Chen Studio is a simplistic, outdoorsy house to be enjoyed by the modern Mid-western family. Drawing from the influences of Texas architecture, the house uses the natural landscape of central Texas to create a house that was truly built from the ground up. The house contradicts modern suburban America structure by subverting the concept of multiple floors in favor a single sprawling base floor, as well as a basement.

Featuring enough amenities to make any luxury home buyer buckle at the knee’s, this home is sure to serve as the architectural pride and joy of central Texas for years to come.

The house manages to be build upon its roots while also looking resembling a beautiful modern home.

Built to accommodate greater amounts of open light and garden areas, the home looks like a dream for any young couple looking to raise a family in a tender, nurturing environment.

By uniting such simple concepts to create a stunning home, Space Architecture succeeds in their goal of making a memorable home.
