On the 19th of May, Christie’s, the world’s leader in auctioneering modern and contemporary art, will auction off an interesting selection of vintage Hermés, Louis Vuitton and Dunhill luggage. Held in Christie’s South Kensington branch in London, it is a tempting opportunity to build a collection with lasting value, as luxury items such as these are more in vogue than ever. Several of the items on sale include two cream coloured canvas and leather suitcases by Hermés dating back to the mid-20th century, estimated at about $2,200 – $3,000; two black cases by Dunhill and T. Anthony, the first of black leather in semi-circular form with one fitted tray and gunmetal hardware, the second of black fabric with leather strapping, lined in moiré with various pockets and gilt hardware, estimated at about $1,200 – $1,500; and a monogram hard-side case and cover by Louis Vuitton, estimated at about $900 – $1,200.

The new BMW Museum, adjacent to the Group’s headquarters in Munich, provides a unique brand exprerience. It is a brand museum that showcases the historical evolution of the brand’s competence and innovative strength, along with its achievements and sporting successes. The development of the BMW brand is traced from the past to the present and on into the future. At the core of the exhibition material are the brand’s icons such as the BMW R 32, the BMW 507 and the legendary BMW 2002. Exhibits, encompassing production and racing models as well as concept vehicles, bear testimony to the great history of the BMW brand. Exceptional exhibition technology underlines the aspiration of the Museum’s new concept: “Once again BMW is setting new trends and embarking on untrodden paths to link up the history of its vehicles with that of the company in an exciting and surprising way. Dwell Magazine Article – Salvage Love

dwell-article-main

Dwell is one of my favorite magazines, and I seek much of the inspiration of my home in their pages. On their website, they featured a story chronicling Blake Dollahite’s design and construction process for his first home upon graduation.

Several facets fascinated me in this story. First, the images of his domicile were impressive in using salvaged materials from Habitat for Humanity ReStores. I truly respect that approach; not just for green measures, but also incorporating a sense of history and/or character to a space. There is something slightly off-putting to me when a home is completely modern, new, or streamlined.

The story is equally intriguing. This was a recent art graduate student from the University of Texas, and he was able to purchase and develop a run-down home with merely a small bank loan and two credit cards. His budgeting was extremely intelligent for someone his age – well…because it had to be careful. It took the helping hands of family and friends to see the project come to fruition, and I think the results were amazing.

Boston Globe’s Big Picture “At Work”

boston-at-work-main

Great stories can be conveyed by images alone. Alan Taylor of the Boston Globe’s weblog, The Big Picture, casts a very intimate portrait in his post, “At Work.” This powerful series captures the environments, faces, and hands of our world’s workers as they toil to meet demands in our global economy.

With its vibrant oversized photographs, the Boston Globe’s The Big Picture weblog launched on June 1 to instant global acclaim. It’s designed, programmed, and written by Alan Taylor, an old-school web programmer and blogger, in his spare time while working on community features at Boston.com. There have been photoblogs using similar formats with images just as large, but not many are acheiving the same as Taylor with multiple high-res photos on a single page around a theme. Tweed suits, fixed gear bikes, and booze – the Brits know how to do Saturdays the right way. The Tweed Run was held this past weekend, where bikers in dandy tweed outfits road their bikes from H Huntsman & Sons at 11 Savile Row to the Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club. The event looked like it was a blast, and it was a very stylish way to bring true bike culture enthusiasts together. More images after the jump.
