Artist Profile – Stephen Tamiesie Photography

tamiese-main

My referral to this Stephen Tamiesie’s site did not disappoint. This was my first knowledge of the photographer, and I was unsuccessful in digging up background information on this artist. I’m now faced with blogging in direct response to my initial reactions when first viewing his body of work – a simple and complex task. I can simply say that I love his work. It’s painfully difficult for me to describe why in an accurate (or intelligent or thought-provoking, etc.) manner because I’m unfamiliar with photography terminology.

I was struck by the clarity and color temperature in the photographs. There was an etheral and gloomy feeling captured in the pictures. He is able to add those dimensions and feelings from his camera that I don’t think I would experience if standing in front of stacked cargo freight.

Stephen Tamiesie’s site has three series: Places, Signs of American Life, The Salton Sea. I loved every one of them, and it’s not a single note repeated in his subject matter. Many works in ‘Places’ manage to display inanimate objects and their surroundings into geometric patterns (i.e. a storefront, stacked cargo freight). ‘Signs of American Life’ views the expansiveness of the rural West of U.S and captures some stunning natural landscape. My favorite series, ‘The Salton Sea,’ where Tamiesie documents in beautiful fashion the remains of an area in the California desert ravaged by the flooding of the Colorado River 100 years ago. These images struck a chord with me because the images seemed peacefully eerie. It looked completely desolate and other-worldly.

Boston Globe’s Big Picture “At Work”

boston-at-work-main

Great stories can be conveyed by images alone. Alan Taylor of the Boston Globe’s weblog, The Big Picture, casts a very intimate portrait in his post, “At Work.” This powerful series captures the environments, faces, and hands of our world’s workers as they toil to meet demands in our global economy.

With its vibrant oversized photographs, the Boston Globe’s The Big Picture weblog launched on June 1 to instant global acclaim. It’s designed, programmed, and written by Alan Taylor, an old-school web programmer and blogger, in his spare time while working on community features at Boston.com. There have been photoblogs using similar formats with images just as large, but not many are acheiving the same as Taylor with multiple high-res photos on a single page around a theme. Classic Pornography Posters from the 60’s

60s-posters-main

Marketing pornography has taken many different approaches since the 60’s. With the porn industry being a multi-billion dollar industry today, these posters give us a nostalgic look at a time when dvd’s and free porn sites were non-existent. It also gives a glimpse of how these posters didn’t really need to have raunchy and explicit images to sell the movies. More posters after the jump.

Illustrations by Matthew Hollings

hollings-main

Matthew Hollings has captured the faces of past and present’s famous music artists and reworked them. His signature style incorporates digital mark-making on his scanned hand-sketches. These compositions are not enhanced by digital rendering, but rather evolved into something completely new. The effects most often add movement and vibrancy to the images. More of his portfolio can be viewed at his site.
