Margaret Howell – Fall / Winter 2009 Collection

With an overall grey and black color palette, the Margaret Howell collection for this Fall and Winter isn’t overwhelmingly somber. The colors certainly do not evoke any excitement, but it’s the execution of the pieces that has successfully kept Margaret Howell on the lips of admirers. Surprisingly, the collection consists of all classic wardrobe pieces which includes crewneck sweaters, an extraordinary cable-knit cardigan, a couple anoraks, solid colored grey and white button-up shirts and even a striped long-sleeved tee. So what, right? Howell is a master of creating the most beautiful garments that have a natural and lived-in look. It’s a simple collection that could easily be set up as a man’s lifelong winter wardrobe.

KZO Spring/Summer 2010 Collection – Into the Blue

KZO’s line-up for next Spring and Summer manages to extract the hippest trends from the current crop of casual streetwear and creates their own collection that is very much of the moment. Their collection entitled, “Into the Blue, Out of the Black,” draws its inspiration from workwear such as chambray shirts and denim work jackets; prep-inspired cardigans, khakis and checkered shorts; rustic outerwear such as the mountain parka, sweats, plaid and checkered shirts and the American-Indian shorts which has sprouted up in several Japanese designer collections. All of these looks are made into a cohesive line by pairing it with those tattered Japanese selvage denim and Doc Martens which add to the youth and rebellion.
Forty Fine Clothing Spring/Summer 2009

We’ve just recently uncovered Forty Fine Clothing during our daily scouring of the internet. Their stockists are primarily located in Japan, but consumers across the world can purchase items on the several Japanese online stores such as US Online Shop.
From the Spring/Summer ‘09 looks found on their site, the collection is a sophisticated approach to casual or streetwear. Their current collection offers various denim and khaki bottoms, polos, light tech jackets, knitwear and some simple graphic tees. It comes off as a very simple and practical line. These are the kind of statements in style that speak volumes without being overly pretentious.

Bassett Walker – Spring / Summer 2009

Bassett Walker is a Japanese label that is breaking ground in producing some of the most refined in ready-to-wear and suiting. The more formal items from their Spring and Summer 2009 have an ease to them that may not be as prim as the more established suit-tailoring institutions, but they also haven’t gravitated toward the slim lapel and silhouette as most contemporary designers have been doing for nearly the decade.
Their looks on the site incorporate many other labels (Band of Outsiders, Psycho Bunny, uniform experiment, et al.) that integrate with their items seemlessly. Bassett Walker collaborated with Hiroshi Tsubouchi on their shoe collection to create an awesome line that exudes sophistication. They seem to cover all bases from shoes to accessories – even producing eyeglass frames, socks and jewelery.

E. Tautz – Spring/Summer 2010 Collection

The E. Tautz label suggests a heralded tradition of classic English suit tailoring, and designer Patrick Grant is expanding on that heritage to include a sophisticated and timeless approach to ready-to-wear items. For the E.Tautz Spring and Summer collections, one will still find remarkable craftsmanship in the suiting. The inclusion of double-breasted suit coats offer a nice balance with the two and three-button jackets. The striking addition of more casual knitwear to the collection ushers a revitalized E.Tautz into the modern era which is sure to make a profound impact.

Benji Wagner Photography

A Time to Get points us to the works of Benji Wagner, a commercial and editorial photographer and filmmaker based in Portland, Oregon. The subjects in his works are practitioners of active lifestyles whether it’s skateboarding, motocross or travellers. Many of the images he captures show his subjects in action of their respective sport, but the most affecting element from his works are the candid moments – the preparation, downtime, etc. Wagner successfully paints a vivid portrait of these lives.
In his latest work entitled “New Zealand,” Wagner follows a band of cyclists and skateboarders on a road trip of sorts to connect with road and nature. Their most revealing moments are when they set up a roadside camp or enjoy some R&R from their usual activity. It looks as if they are enjoying the most blissful escape from modern life.
