The out and proud All American football star of the University of Missouri has been drafted in the 7th round for Saturday’s NFL Draft. Michael Sam now becomes the first openly gay athlete to be drafted into the professional league.
It was the St. Louis Rams that selected Sam with the overall selection at 249th, making him stay close with his school. In a clip from ESPN, Sam was seen breaking down in tears while he and his family watched the draft together. Then he received the call for the formal draft decision.
It was in February when he first came out as gay. He could be the first openly gay to play in an NFL game by September.
