New York Fashion Week is in full swing and one thing’s for sure, there will be plenty of beautiful models scattered around the city making their way to castings, runway shows, presentations, parties, and after-parties. Now here you are a single male in the city suddenly surrounded by these tall, exotic, statuesque women everywhere you go. Should you be intimidated? How do you make the approach? Are you worthy? To answer some questions about how to pick-up a model during fashion week, we turned to world renowned seduction artist and dating coach, Nicolas Dolteau. He’s French, he’s stylish, and more importantly, he’s got the experience picking up models during fashion week. He’s even got video to prove it.
SL: Are there any preparations a guy should make before he goes out and make the attempt to pick-up a model during fashion week?
ND: Models are just like any other type of girl, so they’ll react to guys the same way any other normal girl would. In terms of preparation, guys should prepare themselves like they do every day. Be well groomed, dress well accordingly to where you’re going, and always smile. If anything, a guy should be more prepared to talk to everyone. He should prepare himself to be really social.
SL: Does being a fashionable male matter?
ND: From my experience, no. Girls who work in the fashion industry, especially models, see fashionable guys every day. When I’ve made attempts to pick-up models, my attire has been for the most part very casual. All I’ll wear is a plain t-shirt, some jeans, and a pair of sneakers.
SL: Best place to talk to a model during fashion week? At a party, the streets, or a runway show (granted they’re not actually on the catwalk)?
ND: Parties are tricky. They’re loud and there are way too many people. You’ll also run into the challenge of other guys hitting on her and you might find yourself having to compete with some drunk obnoxious douche.
The streets are your best bet. If you see a girl who looks like a model and you’re attracted to her, make the approach. Out on the streets, she’s just like any other girl going about her business (non-fashion business). She’s not expecting anyone to approach her so the element of surprise can be intriguing to her. Hey, you might even put a smile on her face and make her day if you talk to her. So go for it.
SL: So what’s the best opener to use to get the conversation started?
ND: Don’t be cliché and don’t state the obvious. Yes, she is tall and yes, she is a model. So don’t start by saying, “wow, you’re tall, are you a model?” You should always have a clear voice. Show intent. When you have the balls to talk to her, she’ll know right away that you’re a guy who’s confident and secure, and that’s something all girls (not just models) can appreciate. Something as simple as saying, “I just saw you and I just had to say hi because you look adorable.” Here, you’ve made it clear you want to talk to her, and you’ve given her a complement. Start from here and you’re good to go.
SL: What’s the best way to make that deep connection with her once you get the conversation rolling?
ND: You should definitely talk about her childhood. What was she like as a child? What games did she like playing? You should also talk about her future. Where does she see herself in the future? Does she ever want to stop modeling? You should also talk about her interests and hobbies and try to find out more about them. Does she like to paint? What type of music does she like? Try to relate to her interests as best you can. Also, try to avoid making the conversation sound like a job interview by asking too many questions. Just keep the conversation interesting and fun.
SL: What should a guy do next after he gets her number?
ND: Once you get her number, you should immediately, at that instant invite her for a quick cup of coffee at a laid back place. If the conversation goes really well, invite her for some drinks the next day. If she’s a busy model, she probably travels a lot, so strike when the opportunity knocks.
SL: Do you have any advice on the first date with a fashion model? Where should a guy take her?
ND: In this video I invited a girl to have a drink outside nearby “La Seine.” She appreciated the fact that I took her to a nice comfortable place where we can chat and have a good time. It’s really not about how expensive the place is so you can impress her with how much money you have. It’s about showing her a nice time and having a great conversation.
SL: What are five things you feel guys should never do when it comes to picking up a model?
a. Don’t put too much emphasis that she’s a model.
b. Don’t mention the types of girls you used to date. Don’t say,” I used to date a model once.”
c. Don’t try to impress her with how much money you have.
d. Don’t get drunk around her.
e. Stop bringing up the fact that she’s tall.
SL: You’re a pretty stylish fellow yourself. What are some of your favorite brands to wear? Any style advice you want to give to our readers?
ND: I’m a big fan of suits. Girls love it when a guy is dressed well in a proper suit. I have a few suits from Sandro, Paul & Joe, and Topman that I like to wear. The Topman one looks great! When it comes to footwear, I like vintage leather boots or a pair of Repetto Zizi’s to go with my suit.
My style advice to guys who want to pick up models:
Don’t overdo it. Don’t try hard by putting on too many things at once. Basically, try not to look like a Christmas tree and you’ll be fine.
