In his video series “Fresh Off The Boat,” Eddie Huang takes us on various trips to explore the foodie cultures around the world. His latest episode in season two takes place in Shanghai, where he takes us out of the mainstream and into the local scene.
A restaurateur, food personality, writer, and Hip Hop enthusiast, Eddie Huang has his own unique way of dissecting any foodie culture around the world. In this episode, he takes us into the world of a family of local Shanghai street vendors to learn what it’s like to live and work in Shanghai. During the day, he partakes in some local Shanghainese cuisine, one of the four major cuisines in China, which features sweet and savory dishes. What’s especially interesting is his exploration of the midnight snack scene, where street vendors and customers create a mini-restaurant district out of nowhere. While the video is focused on the local foodie experience, what the video also captures is the type of fulfilling and rewarding life these local street vendors can live on the Shanghai streets.
