2013 was the year certain actresses, musicians, and models broke through and claimed (or reclaimed) the spotlight. As the year comes to a close, we’ve picked out 12 of our favorite women of 2013. We think our list is pretty solid and we based our choices on the usual credentials of beauty, talent, and appeal. Our list started out very long, but we narrowed it down to these 12 because we spent a good amount of time arguing for the support of certain ladies who deserved a spot on the list. Weighing out pros and cons have never been so much fun. Drop a line on our comment section if you feel we missed out on someone who should be on this list. Enjoy.
1. Emily Ratajkowski
It was hard to escape Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” once it hit the airwaves. However, when the music video came out for the single, we couldn’t help but want to know who the hot brunette was. Of course, the blogs and men’s magazines went nuts and gave Emily Ratajkowski the exposure she deserved. It was so much exposure, that she even got a part in David Fincher’s new film “Gone Girl” releasing in 2014. Judging from some of her editorial spreads and the “Blurred Lines” music video, we’re hoping for a nude scene or two in her upcoming movie.
2. Lizzy Caplan
For awhile, it was hard for me to shake off the fact that Lizzy Caplan played alongside Lindsay Lohan in one of my favorite films, Mean Girls. But then Ms. Caplan took on more serious and career progressing roles and it’s finally paid off. Now she’s in the lead role for Showtime’s breakout hit of 2013, “Masters of Sex” as human sexuality researcher Virginia Johnson. Lindsey Lohan take notes.
3. Beyoncé Knowles
Beyoncé’s 2013 really took off when she performed during the Super Bowl XLVII half-time show. I’m actually convinced she was the reason the lights went out during the second half of the game. Mrs. Carter also won her seventeenth Grammy this year, as well as kicking off a much successful concert tour. She graced both the covers of Vogue and GQ magazines and starred in one of the most talked about Pepsi commercials. Oh those legs. I could go on with more things Beyoncé accomplished this year, but I’m sure you already know that when it comes to asking the question, who runs the world? The answer is Beyoncé. Sorry Oprah.
4. Kate Upton
Sometimes there are no words to describe Kate Upton. Sometimes when arguments arise on who your favorite girl is right now, you just gotta pull up a picture on your smartphone and show would-be naysayers images of Kate Upton in a bikini. No words needed. Argument over. Kate Upton Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue 2013 cover. End. Of. Story.
5. Jennifer Lawrence
Hunger Games. American Hustle. Academy Award winner. A few magazine covers. And something about butt plugs. Yes, Jennifer Lawrence had a big year and we’re sure it’ll just keep getting better for her in 2014. This adorable blonde is unbeatable and we love her personality and overall style. She is without a doubt the top girl in Hollywood right now.
6. Cara Delevingne
This list wouldn’t be complete without Cara Delevingne. We love this girl. From her kooky facial expressions to her spontaneous pranks, Cara is the crazy, funny gal any guy would love to be with. As one of the more sought after models in the industry, she’s become high fashion’s go-to girl as well as becoming one of the more well-known Victoria Secret models. We especially loved her strut during the recent Victoria Secret fashion show. She’s definitely a crowd pleaser.
7. Adrianne Ho
Streetwear loves Adrianne Ho. The likes of Visvim, Stussy, and Hypebeast have worked with this half French half Chinese beauty in some of their editorial spreads this year. She also launched a workout website called Sweat the Style, which I’m sure a lot of you reading this will visit more often in the near future. While not one of the more well-known models on our list, we approve of her place on this list just out of sheer beauty and “hype,” a very strong word streetwear enthusiasts use as a barometer for what’s hot at the moment.
8. Kate Moss
Kate Moss was relatively quiet this year until December came around and Playboy gave her the cover for their 60th anniversary edition. Kate Moss turns 40 in January, and still looks great. I can’t think of any other model, who’s iconic status is as strong as hers right now. Her partnership with Playboy just sounded right and Playboy did the right thing in honoring this special beauty for their anniversary.
9. Kerry Washington
ABC’s Scandal was the network’s biggest hit this year with Kerry Washington as its leading star. We love Kerry for her beauty, talent, and intelligence. She’s the perfect package, and she likes to keep things private, only giving the media quick peeks of her personal life. We really respect women who don’t feel the need to have their whole business out there for the world to criticize. Other notable moments for Kerry was her appearance on Saturday Night Live and landing some great magazine covers.
10. Scarlett Johansson
Esquire crowned Scarlett Johansson the Sexiest Woman Alive this year. We won’t argue with that. We also loved Scarlett in Don Jon as Joseph-Gordon Levitt’s girlfriend in the film. Even as a jersey Girl with a strong obnoxious Jersey accent, we’d still love to date her. There’s a lot of things to love about Scarlett, but for us, we’d rather just love everything about her. We look forward to 2014 when Scarlett reprises her role as the Black Widow in the upcoming Captain America sequel. Scarlett Johansson + black leather bodysuit = win.
11. Naya Rivera
The more exposure Naya Rivera gets, the happier we also get. Well, except for the news that she got engaged to rapper Big Sean. As one of Glee’s top girls, Naya has gotten a lot of buzz this year for her magazine covers, red carpet styles, and television commercials. She’s the reason we’ve been eating more M&M’s. We really hope this trend continues for Naya in 2014, as we’d love to see more of her for the coming year.
