Ichiro Suzuki, a longtime Seattle Mariner and 10-time MLB All-Star, was recently traded to the New York Yankees. As a tribute to the former American League MVP, Seattle-based rocker Ben Gibbard, of Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service fame, bid a farewell through an original song. Posting “Ichiro’s Theme” on his Soundcloud page, he wrote that the song was written years ago but this day was the perfect time to release it. The song drives with vintage power-pop melodies while Gibbard sings proudly and fondly of Ichiro’s base-stealing prowess. He advises (Yankees) fans to never take their eyes off Ichiro, because he knows that at any moment, Ichiro will blow everyone’s minds. It’s an honor for Gibbard to write a song for a player who deserves the recognition. The trade is a shame for the Seattle Mariners, but hopefully the Yankees will also get to receive Ichiro’s glory and amazing talent.
