The Cascading U Two-Family Residence features two independent dwellings, with one on top of the other. Unlike typical houses with a back yard and front yard, the U-shaped plan of the house allows a third outdoor space to penetrate the building’s center. Access to the two stories may be found smack dead in the center of the house which also happens to contain a courtyard. The interior of the house also uniquely connects the all exterior spaces through the volume of the house, in which the front yard, back yard, and the courtyard become extensions of living space. The upper floors of the house step down toward the street and the roofs imitate the sloping landscape while letting in light.
