The (2011) Hollywood version of Stieg Larsson’s novel “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” is a riveting dramatic thriller although this depiction is not an exact remake and offers variations from the Swedish rendering. The titular character of Lisabeth Salander is stunningly portrayed by Rooney Mara. Once respected, investigative reporter Mikael Blomkvist (sturdy and virile Daniel Craig) now dishonored because of an unjust journalism charge, seeks redemption to clear his name. He’s called to the home of retired business magnate Henrik Vanger (Christopher Plummer) to solve the forty-year-old disappearance and possible murder of his great-niece in a dysfunctional family of sexual deviants, criminals, and race mongers. The beleaguered, tattooed and pierced Salander is a gutsy, anti-heroine who becomes Mikael’s assistant, while her troubled past plays an integral part in the ensuing happenings involving devious kin in the hunt for a serial killer.
Director David Fincher/”The Social Network” helms the enthralling pulp fiction plot essayed by top-flight actors in challenging characterizations who deliver on-target performances. Bring on number two of the thrill-ogy!
