Faced with limited property space in an already overcrowded Japan, Mizuishi Architects Atelier created an innovative and elegant solution: the House with Futokuro. Drawing its name from a Japanese word meaning “recess space,” the house covers a miniscule 108 square meters while using every last bit of space wisely. A centrally located light well above the staircase funnels sunlight into the house, and along with the extensive use of wood, provides a very natural feel for a residence squeezed in between other man-made creations. The wooden lattice screen at the front of the home offers a touch of privacy and makes for quite the interesting facade. Given the tight fit, the House with Futokuro is an extremely intelligent design.
