Even if Hugh Hefner created The Playboy Club, no one man personified the moniker of playboy than legendary pop-star Serge Gainsbourg. Even more legendary than his tunes were his lovers of international acclaim: Brigitte Bardot, Jane Birkin, Juliette Greco – the list could go on and on.
While trying to capture the essence of such a life steeped in extravagance may seem like an impossible task, French comic-book artist Joann Sfar gave it a solid effort in his new film Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life, playing at the Film Forum in New York. The film chronicles Gainsbourg’s (played by Eric Elmosnino) upbringings in Nazi occupied Paris through his transformation into a world-renowned singer-songwriter and a man that became as notorious for his antics off the stage as his performance on it. You probably won’t see a film with more cigarettes and sex this year, and that’s not a bad thing at all.
