“I Don’t Know How She Does It” plays like a TV sitcom. Sarah Jessica Parker is Kate Reddy, a high profile investment broker also juggling marriage and children. Architect-hubby Richard (Greg Kinnear) is the dependable, loyal mate and loving parent. Predictably, the hectic pace of long hours and business trips causes Kate to start coming apart. Attraction from a debonair colleague, well played by Pierce Brosnan could adversely affect her shaky marriage. Aside from some amusing moments, “…How She Does It” is trivial, and might offend hard-working women in similar situations.
The film uses the device of characters suddenly speaking to the audience; something I find distracting. Especially in this film, the diversion was unsettling and caused me to stop focusing on the plot and lose interest. This is a Sarah Jessica Parker project, a “working girl/career woman” farce wherein she employs her comic timing and manages not to fall flat on her face. Greg Kinnear is the perfect choice as the loyal husband but it’s a part that he could do in his sleep. Douglas McGrath directs Aline Brosh McKenna’s screenplay based on Allison Pearson’s 2002 best seller novel. Kelsey Grammer, Jane Curtin, Christina Hendricks, and Seth Meyers appear in non-descript supporting roles.
