Everybody’s favorite gangster/politician is back on screen in the Roaring Twenties as Enoch “Nucky” Thompson (Steve Buscemi) on HBO’s critically acclaimed Boardwalk Empire. Fresh off an impressive 8 Emmy wins (and an even more impressive 18 Emmy nominations), the series known for insatiable attention to detail picks up where it last left off, firmly defining itself as not just a Sopranos set during Prohibition, but it’s own television entity, capable of creating a world full of debauchery and corruption all it’s own.
Nucky starts the second season in a variety of compromising situations, most of all facing hard time behind bars for alleged voter fraud. Nucky’s power doesn’t come without it’s fair share of highs and lows, as he finds himself betrayed by what he thought were some of his closest allies. The trailer alludes to the kind of violence and illegal activity we’ve come to associate with Nucky and his crew, only to be accentuated as tensions run higher on the boardwalk.
The highly touted, period-appropriate look of the series remains unchanged, juxtaposing the grime and glamour associated with Atlantic City in the 20′s. The costuming and set decoration is absolutely spot on, giving Buscemi an even more powerful look in a pinstriped, three-piece suit that seemed to be the uniform of powerful men in the era. Supported by a strong cast of unsavory characters played by Michael Pitt and Michael Shannon, Boardwalk Empire looks too good to be passed over. If you didn’t get the chance to fall in with Nucky and the gang the first time around, make sure you start watching now.
The second season kicks off this Sunday, September 25th at 9 EST on HBO.
