It can be hard to find that ‘rebel without a cause’ look in the established world of menswear, but after drawing inspiration from America’s most iconic post-war rebel in James Dean, Michael Bastian’s Spring/Summer ’12 line effectively breaks some new ground. The line manages to blend some of the masculinity associated with Dean by creating clear cut clothes without any frill, giving the distinction of practicality as well as just a slight touch of flair. The grey front pocket cargos champion minimalism that usually isn’t associated with pants with enough pockets to fit everything in your apartment, forging pants that can be worn as well as packed. The return of Bastian’s classic rugby shirt and tuxedo dinner jacket only enhance the collection, even while sticking to what could be considered his staples. After this strong showing, there isn’t any doubt that Bastian can still pull some influence on the runway.
