Richard Nicholson’s fantastic photographs have captured analog photography labs throughout London, archiving precious pieces of history within the realm of his own art form. Most people seem to believe digital technology has created a death sentence for dark rooms, which could very possibly be true. This is what makes these images so powerful. If one looks past the meaning and sees only a messy room full of bulky equipment, he or she will be missing the true meaning of Nicholson’s project. These frames capture time slipping into a new area.
Digging even deeper into the messages of this collection, one could argue there is a message about the timelessness of a photograph. Photographs will capture a moment and save it forever. There is something ironic about preserving the tools that were once standard in preservation of the past. Nicholson’s well executed project has captured the movement of time, as well as making a statement about the art of photography in genera, with the shutter of a lens.
