“Shark Night 3-D” is par-for-the-course as a Grade B “Jaws” type horror flick with added 3D effects which hike up the cost of the movie ticket. Familiar and formulaic, an unoriginal storyline follows a group of collegian co-eds on a live-it-up weekend vacation. At wealthy, introspective Sara’s (Sara Paxton) lakeside manor house in Louisiana’s bayou country, an assortment of traditional young people includes hunks (Dustin Milligan and Chris Zylka), a sexpot (Katherine McPhee), and gridiron star (Sinqua Walls) with his squeeze (Alyssa Diaz). Two foolhardy troublemakers (Joshua Leonard, Chris Carmack) for reasons of their own, unleash sharks into the waters, when the lake becomes a bloodbath, and where the backwoods local sheriff (Donal Logue) is more a hindrance than a help.
The cast does what it can with the material it has to work with in director David R. Ellis’ (“Snakes on a Plane”) horror thriller with special F/X, CGI and animatronics. More foolish than it’s fun, “Shark Night 3-D” serves as popcorn fodder amongst the bodies and body parts.
