It’s safe to say that the cast of Tomas Alfredson’s adaptation of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, based on the 1974 novel by John Le Carre, is probably one of the greatest ensemble casts ever formed. Around every corner (and there seem to be quite a few dark and scary corners in this film) lurks an Oscar winning actor (Colin Firth), an actor who should win an Oscar soon (Gary Oldman), and an actor who will most likely win one in the future (Tom Hardy). But the acting isn’t the only thing that is placing TTSS on the top of multiple year end award lists; the story of a mole who has infiltrated MI6, and Oldman’s subsequent investigation seems to move at a frenetic, yet slow enough pace to build an incredible amount of suspense that was prevalent throughout most of the Western world during the Cold War. The look of the film also seems to embody the bleak nature of the situation at hand, looking as if it was shot under constant watch of fog, rain, and a dreary gray lens.
TTSS has received positive reviews after premiering at the Venice Film Festival this past weekend, garnering the praise that was anticipated due to the incredible cast and source material. Rave reviews from reputable sources such as Variety and The Playlist only increase the hype, albeit hype that seems to be well deserved.
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy hits theaters September 16th in the UK, followed by a December 9th release date in the States, just in time for an awards season push.
