Fascinating in its presentation of fantasy melding with reality, the darkly comedic “Griff the Invisible” from Australia is nevertheless, touching. Aussie actor, Ryan Kwanten of TV’s “True Blood” is an office dweeb considered a nerd at the firm where he clerks, and contends with harassment from co-worker Tony (Toby Schmitz). After hours, Griff turns into a heroic, costumed crime fighter. At home, he tries adding to his repertoire by conjuring up preparations to render himself invisible. Older brother Tim (Patrick Brammall) wonders about his kid bro’s odd behavior. And much to his dismay, Tim’s girlfriend Melody (Maeve Dermody) and Griff are attracted to one another; she wants to develop a formula to walk through walls.
More of a romance of two quirky people than a superhero movie, whimsical and heartfelt, “Griff…” is writer Leon Ford’s feature film directorial debut blending drama and action in a unique presentation. Charismatic Ryan Kwanten is appealing and endearing as the titular character, and he and Maeve Dermody’s Melody make beautiful music together. “Griff the Invisible” is enchanting entertainment, and an enjoyable date movie.
