Fans of “La Femme Nikita,” “The Professional” & “Hanna” might check out this far-fetched, yet enjoyable fun, B+-revenge thriller. In Bogota, Colombia, Cataleya (Amandla Stenberg) is a ten-year-old girl whose parents are murdered by a Colombian drug lord (Beto Benites) and his accomplice (Jodi Molla). Fast forward, and trained by her uncle Emilio (Cliff Curtis) in the art of assassination, it’s fifteen years later when she’s played by Zoe Saldana as a hit woman on a mission to kill the drug czar and wipe out the entire organization.
Directed with gusto by Olivier Megaton and well choreographed, “Colombiana” doesn’t overdo the emotional moments. Zoe Saldana gives her all in the physically demanding role of a femme fatale. She excels in using weaponry, the martial arts, and kickboxing. Amusingly, the gal has a habit of licking lollipops just as Telly Savalas’ TV character “Kojak” used to. The supporting cast includes Lennie Jones as an FBI agent and an underused Michael Vartan as her love interest. Despite the familiar and predictable, this is an entertaining, escapist popcorn action flick.
