Timely and engrossing, “5 Days of War” is a provocative film to ponder over. Current with today’s headlines, it dates back to 2008 and the separatist war of South Ossetia when Georgians battled Russian soldiers. War correspondent Thomas Anders (Rupert Friend) and his cameraman Sebastian Ganz (Richard Coyle) are on the scene and film a horrific sight but are prevented from letting the world know as Georgian president Saakashvili (Andy Garcia) advocates peace, while the Russians with their greedy allies exhort warfare and bloodshed. The correspondents are assisted by Tatia (Emmanuelle Chriqui), a Georgian schoolteacher.
Action director Renny Harlin (”Die Hard 2,” “Cliffhanger”) helms with a firm hand, with the message of this dramatic political thriller firmly pro-Georgian and anti-Russian.
