“Good Neighbors” is a quirky and intriguing comedic drama focusing on three tenants of an apartment building and their interwoven personal stories. Each is somewhat dysfunctional and has something in his/her life which is best kept under wraps. Music lover Spencer (Scott Speedman) is a wheelchair-bound paralytic widower; weak-willed teacher Victor (Jay Baruchel) is attracted to Louise (Emily Hampshire), a mordant young woman close to Spencer. She also is fonder of her pet cats than people. Revelations eventually unfold in some weird happenings which includes a serial killer on the loose.
Writer-director Jacob Tierney’s cynical film is based on Chrystine Brouillt’s 1982 novel. Well acted by the principals, “Neighbors” is off-the-beaten-track with a scenario which is partially far-fetched and plays out with some dark and violent happenings.
