“Terri” is a winning story of a teen misfit. The emotions expressed are true-to-life with heart and humor. Entertaining with an admirable cast headed by John C. Reilly as Mr. Fitzgerald, a high school vice-principal/guidance counselor extends a helping hand to the eccentric students. His latest challenge is rotund, bullied, and friendless Terri (Jacob Wysocki). Fitzgerald feels compassion for the oddball loner who can’t fit in anywhere, and whose parents pawned him off on an infirmed uncle (Creed Bratton) with whom he unhappily lives. In time, Fitzgerald wins over his overweight charge as the tubby Terri, in his own way helps thin-as-a-rail, fellow student Chad (Bridger Zadina), and another student Heather (Olivia Crocicchia).
Director Azazel Jacobs’ presentation is slow-moving but buoyed by the performances, especially John C. Reilly’s “good Samaritan” with a positive effect on non-conformist pupils. Moviegoers in the mood for another “coming-of-age” narrative might check out “Terri.”
