An apocalypse in the form of a viral epidemic has destroyed the world in “Stake Land,” a low-budget indie which is a worthy, end-of-the-world, gory horror movie. Surviving inhabitants turn into vampiric zombies with scant human survivors wandering about. It’s stark horror without humor as two uninfected humans seek refuge amongst the living dead; the rough-and-tough, gun-toting vampire hunter Mister (co-screenwriter Nick Damici), and his scared, hanger-on teen, Martin (Connor Paolo) heading for possible safety at a place called New Eden. On the road they are joined by a nun, a pregnant woman and a marine (Kelly McGillis, Danielle Harris, and Sean Nelson).
In addition to the vampires there is another enemy to deal with: wacko, religious zealot, Jebediah Loven (Michael Cereris) and his disciples. He is just as much of a threat with his belief that everything has happened because it’s God’s will. There’s sufficient action to whet genre fans appetite in writer-director Jim Mickle’s road movie of travelers vs. reanimated corpses.
