The fourth “Scream” of the popular franchise is stylishly presented in all its gruesomeness. Erstwhile heroine Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) returns home to hype her self-healing book. The unsuspecting author, her kin, and friends are potential victims of the resurfacing Ghostface killer embodied by a new character and an equally vicious accomplice. The filmmakers devise a clever scenario incorporating the parody film “Stab” into “Scream’s” grisly happenings as the reunion turns terrifying once Ghostface shows up slicing and dicing hapless prey.
Director Wes Craven of the original (’96) “Scream” helms the current entry with Kevin Williamson’s inventive screenplay of more violence and witty humor. It’s a fun ride watching familiar faces do their thing. Sheriff Dewey Riley (David Arquette), more on the ball with less bumbling, is married to former TV reporter Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox). Sidney’s relatives include Aunt Kate (Mary McDonnell), Cousin Jill (Emma Roberts), and her friend Kirby Reed (Hayden Panetierre). There’s student filmmaker Charlie Walker (Rory Culkin), and Anthony Anderson as Deputy Perkins. Throughout, “Scream 4” has what it takes to put atrocities over with a goodly amount of drollery.
