“Trust” should be part of a school’s curriculum with compulsory viewing by both adults and students. Computer savvy youngsters routinely surf the Internet entering online chat rooms; so does fourteen-year-old suburbanite, Annie Cameron (Liana Liberato) who has an ongoing correspondence with sixteen-year-old Charlie. To her, it’s a meaningful relationship while her neglectful parents Will (Clive Owen) and Lynn (Catherine Keener) are preoccupied getting their older son off to college. Charlie manages to ingratiate himself into Annie’s confidence because she believes they’re soul mates and consents to meet. When teenage Charlie shows up, he’s really thirtysomething Glen (Chris Henry Coffey), a predatory pedophile.
Actor-turned-director David Schwimmer (TV’s “Friends”) presents a notable, hard-hitting drama. Similar in concept to “Hard Candy” (2006), it’s not to be missed. Clive Owen and Catherine Keener hit just the right chords feeling they failed their child for not being protective parents. Viola Davis, in a supporting role is a purposeful, compassionate school counselor. Portraying the pivotal character, newcomer Liana Liberato is staggering in her interpretation of the naïve victim in this thought-provoking film out of today’s headlines.
