“Hanna,” like “La Femme Nikita” is a skillful assassin trained by her former CIA agent-father Erik (Eric Bana) in hand-to-hand combat, the martial arts, and survivalist techniques. In the corker of a surrealistic action thriller, sixteen-year-old Hanna Heller (Saorise Ronan) plays her killer character to the hilt. Having been sheltered all her life by her single parent in a frozen wasteland called home, Hanna is uncivilized, and animalistic in nature. Protected from the world outside, she has been tutored primarily to carry out a mysterious mission. Both father and daughter are targets on the hit list of villainous, Marisa Wiegler (Cate Blanchett, deliciously evil), a vengeful, CIA operative who worked with Erik years before. She’s out for blood, and relentless in her pursuit to destroy them in this action-filled entry which is a cat-and-mouse game. Dubious goings-on aren’t fully defined but, nevertheless, are exciting and entertaining to watch.
Director Joe Wright is at the top of his game helming the enigmatic dramatic thriller with A-1 performances. Ronan is a stand-out as a wild child killing machine, and Blanchett appears to be relishing every rotten move she herself makes. The fight scenes are well-choreographed in this choice filmmaking.
