Limitless headlines Bradley Cooper and it is a unique morality tale in a contemporary, science fiction theme. Eddie Morra (Cooper, in a stirring portrayal) is a wannabe novelist stymied by writer’s block when his drug dealing ex-brother-in-law gives him an experimental substance called NZT. Eddie takes the magic pill which enhances his thought processes, and memories. He becomes a prolific author excelling in music, cashes in on Wall Street, and is near-genius. Ruthless, financial whiz Carl Van Loon (Robert De Niro in a supporting role) wants in on NZT’s potential to increase his wealth, and wants Eddie’s input so he can close a corporate deal. But, if there’s a downside to the ecstatic, psychedelic lifestyle, could the wondrous miracle’s side effects be disastrous? Eddie gets more than he bargained for when others seeking fame and fortune use brutality to get what they want, including targeting him on a hit list.
Director Neil Burger adapts the fantasy thriller from Alan Glynn’s novel, “The Dark Fields” and delivers a choice presentation with impressive performances. Underused are Abby Cornish as Eddie’s girlfriend who breaks up with him, and Anna Friel portraying his ex- wife.
