“Battle: Los Angeles” is another movie about outer space aliens attacking Earth. Borrowing from such films as “War of the Worlds” &“Starship Troopers,” it’s a no-brainer with clichéd dialogue, ludicrous situations, and wastes no time in blasting off. Supposed meteors crashing onto Earth are the invaders’ craft containing weapon-wielding, grotesque, alien creatures seeking our water supply and killing everyone for the precious resource. Lead actor Aaron Eckhart plays a take charge, seasoned Marine guilt ridden because of an error in judgment when his men died in the Iraqi war while he survived. Ready to retire, he’s called back to duty in the sneak attack. Also along for the ride are a wasted Michelle Rodriguez and Bridget Moynahan.
Director Jonathan Liebesman OD’s with action in a pumped up war movie filmed with too many fast-moving, eye-blurring shots. It is difficult to distinguish what is actually happening, and who’s doing what to whom. When a character expresses deep-felt concern, it comes across as mawkish prompting giggles. Overall, the movie is an actionfest which plays like a G.I. Joe video game; long on action, short on logic.
