“Unknown” is a well-made suspense film. If you overlook the contrivance-filled plot which becomes increasingly convoluted with far-fetched happenings, sturdy and durable Liam Neeson (“Taken”) is the driving force that carries the movie. Botanical scientist Dr. Martin Harris (Neeson) and his wife Elizabeth (January Jones/”Mad Men”) arrive in Germany where he’ll lecture at a Berlin conference on a revolutionary advancement in botany. Attempting to retrieve a lost attaché case which includes his passport, he’s in an accident, but Gina (Diane Kruger), a heroic woman saves his life. Recovering, he’s amnesic and told he isn’t who he thinks he is. Elizabeth disclaims any knowledge of him and that another man (Aidan Quinn) is her husband. With strangers in pursuit intending to do harm and his identity stolen, Martin’s a man alone in a foreign country.
Director Jaume Collet-Serra has crafted an engrossing albeit, perplexing dramatic thriller replete with action-filled scenes. Frank Langella and Aidan Quinn offer strong performances in meaningful supporting roles.
