The Roommate
“The Roommate” is a trivial knock-off of “Single White Female” and only for those in the mood for a pass-the-time, similar type of psycho drama. At a fictitious L.A. university, dormitory student Rebecca’s (Leighton Meester/”Gossip Girl”) new roommate is Sara (Minka Kelly) who unwittingly becomes the object of her compulsive obsession. She fixates on and literally stalks her. When Sara starts dating fraternity student/musician Steven (Cam Gigandet), Rebecca considers him a threat that can steal her away, but sister collegian Tracy (Aly Michalka) sees through her strangely sinister behavior and warns Sara of her suspicions.
Routinely predictable, “The Roommate” by Denmark’s director Christian E. Christiansen in his English-language debut film, doesn’t offer much that’s fresh and original. There are some creepy, shake-you-up moments but they’re no great shakes. The cast does their best in the suspense, which plays out in this torpid entry of the genre.
