From “The Exorcist” to “The Last Exorcism,” “The Rite” is another similarly themed supernatural thriller of demonic possession. At a seminary school, theologian student Michael Kovak (Colin O’Donoghue) undecided about his calling accepts a position in Rome at the Vatican to be trained as an exorcist. Tutored by a master Father Lucas Trevant (Anthony Hopkins) using unconventional methods, Michael remains dubious believing psychiatry will help afflicted souls. But his convictions weaken after witnessing a young boy and pregnant, teenage girl manifest bizarre behavior including contortions, foreign voices and spewing forth blasphemies.
Swedish filmmaker Mikael Hafstrom directs the atmospheric chiller inspired by real events with apropos production qualities. Anthony Hopkins is a hoot in an over-the-top performance; he practically climbs the walls putting on a show of exaggerated emotions, and it’s a helluva fun time watching a battle between the divine and the devil. Supporting roles include Alice Braga as an inquisitive journalist and a sorely wasted Rutger Hauer in an underwritten role as Michael’s mortician father.
