Daft Punk has all the 1′s and 0′s hitting the dance floor with their new music video “Derezzed”. The song ties in directly with the upcoming release of Tron: Legacy. For those of you not obsessed with twenty-eight year old sci-fi films, Tron: Legacy continues the story of Kevin Flynn, a software programmer inadvertently sucked into the virtual world he helped create. The sequel stars his son Sam Flynn (hence the legacy) as he mounts his own investigation into what really happened to his father all those years ago.
As a fan of the original Tron I have a lot of respect for what Daft Punk has created with ‘Derezzed’. We’re treated to an epic light cycle battle between good guys (blue) and bad guys (orange) seeking to settle the score once and for all. The video does a great job capturing the feeling of speed and anxiety that made the original light cycle battles so memorable. To top it all off, the updated graphics make the virtual world of ‘The Grid’ look absolutely gorgeous.
As for the song itself, ‘Derezzed’ sounds like it could fit right in at the video arcade with just the right amount of ‘bleeps’ and ‘bloops’ in the background to pay homage to the video arcade setting without sounding patronizing. I’m sure both old school and new school fans of Tron will be able to get down with this Daft Punk jam. Check it out!
