As a music fan I find myself scouring the darkest corners of the internet looking for new artists. Sometimes however I get lucky and find a great band in my own backyard. Neur hails from New Brunswick, NJ and has been tearing up the underground basement scene for the past few months with no intention of stopping.
The band places a modern twist on the post-punk scene sounding like the natural progression of classic bands like Slint, Jawbox, and Cap’n Jazz. At the same time, the band stands apart from most artists in this genre through the addition of vocalist Tom Baumann who brings howls and growls that could fit in nicely alongside Cedric Bixler-Zavala from the Mars Volta or Dennis Lyxzén from the Refused.
The result is a band that shifts between two polar extremes of post-punk and end up carving their own interesting new space. With an EP just released this past week old fans and new listeners alike can download the self-titled album for free (or for donation) off Neur’s bandcamp page. Don’t miss out on making this band part of your playlist for 2011.
