“Brooklyn’s Finest” is an instrument album by The Stuyvesants comprised of producer Allan “Algorythm” Cole and record collector Darien Victor Birks (Flwrpt). I recently had them at the last B.L.A.P. showcase in New York and they definitely were the crowd favorite of the night. I wouldn’t consider the digital album a “beat tape,” where the sounds can stand alone without vocals.
The group’s name derives from the Beford-Stuyvesant neighborhood where they live. The Brooklyn, NY section is famous for being the home to many Hip-Hop legends including The Notorious B.I.G. and Jay-Z. Other notable residents include director Spike Lee, comedian Chris Rock and actress and signer Lena Horne.

The album inspired The Stuys’ colleague and rapper Fresh Daily to add some vocals to one of the beats and as a result “The Stuy (On My Mind)” was born. Once taking a stroll with Fresh along the Brooklyn brownstones, you get a glimpse of what the Stuyvesants were trying to accomplish – capturing the soul of their Brooklyn home through sound.
