Derrick Cruz, the brainchild of his brand of unorthordox art objects, Black Sheep and Prodigal Sons, is set to unveil his new line of men’s and women’s jewelry during the upcoming Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. New York-based Cruz’s jewelry line, entitled ‘Theft of Light’, uses the same formula of brooding designs and unlikely materials to create a set of new pieces, such as horsehair bracelets, ebony and ivory keys plucked from vintage pianos, and Navajo-influenced leather strapping. However, ‘Theft of Light’ has a poignant edge, as Cruz created his new line as a tribute to his father Jose, who passed away this year at the age of 57. Like his son, Jose Cruz was also a cross-cultural creative, having created a traditional Native American gallery and craft studio in Colorado after emigrating from Puerto Rico, and earning membership at a local tribe in the process.
