Bauhaus Chessmen And Board by Josef Hartwig

bauhaus chess set

It would appear that the chess set holds the same appeal to industrial designers that wine bottles have on graphic designers–they can’t resist designing another iteration. But seemingly the most popular and esteemed abstract take on the chess set is the version master craftsman Josef Hartwig, of the Bauhaus wood-carving workshop, created in 1924. Made of maple wood, his set is a standard of Bauhaus design– cubes, cylinders, and balls which are not arbitrarily applied to their respective pieces, but actually reflect their movements. Available at the MoMA store.
