Washington DC Home by Hugh Newell Jacobsen
Iconic architect Hugh Newell Jacobsen designed this modern home in Washington D.C., which was recently placed on the market for $1.4 million. The home, in signature Jacobsen style, reinterprets traditional American architectural vernacular with gabled forms and a rectangular plan, based around a series of exterior pavilions. Four distinct structures intersect one another in a staggered arrangement, each with sliding doors allowing access to exterior spaces. The forms are kept pure and distinct with white cladding and shingled roofs punctured by skylights. The extensive use of glass includes windows in the gables, filling the interior with natural light. Interior spaces are simple and unobstructed, allowing fluid movement between primary living spaces. The white from the exterior continues inside, where it contrasts against a dark tiled floor and brightly colored accent pieces.
Jacobsen’s architecture firm continues to operate in Washington D.C., and the relevance of this classic modern home is a testament to his lasting design ideology.
