Umit Benan Spring/Summer 2010 Collection

Globe-trotting designer Umit Benan has imagined a mischief-filled Cuban mansion as the inspirational setting for his Spring/Summer 2010 collection. Holed up inside, a squad of scruffy scoundrels spiff themselves up in saggy suit-pants and Scarface-inspired dinner jackets, having raided recklessly the closet of a thicker and much richer man. Mixing linen, jersey and crisp but crumpled cotton in a nautical-gone-naughty colorway, the kick of Benan’s Cuba collection is its contrasting connotations. Feminine flourishes such as ruffles turn somehow rugged, workwear-relegated pieces like overalls suddenly ooze lazy luxury, and upper-class elegance devolves into dimwitted dowdiness through Benan’s quirky cuts and cinematic styling. “Purposely tacky,” the designer has dubbed these latest looks which might just be the most compelling contrast of his newest collection.
