Give the armed forces credit. On commission from the United States Air Force come two battle-ready warriors, tuned by California’s Galpin Auto Sports. The 500bhp fire-breathing Mustang has been completely reworked, retaining its stock displacement but not much else. The scissor doors, forged wheels, and full aero kit are no match, however, for the real show going on inside the car. The X-1′s fighter jet-styled cockpit sports three instrument panels, which, among other things, relay night and thermal images to the driver, rendering the windshield almost completely obsolete. The Dodge Challenger Vapor, which is packed to the hilt with nitrous oxide and has one of the meanest exhausts we’ve ever seen, also shows off the latest in military technology. In addition to a cockpit configuation similar to the X-1, the Vapor wears a radar-absorbing exterior. In a further snub of KITT, the Vapor uses a biometric system to identify the driver and borrows a remote control system based on the USAF’s Unmanned Aerial Vehicles project. The Air Force intends to use these creations as recruiting tools on an upcoming national tour.
